Professor and Regional Chair Surgery, Chief Thoracic Surgery, Hackensack Meridian Health
Dr. Bhora is a Board-certified general and thoracic surgeon with a focus on thoracic oncology, specializing in minimally invasive, robotic surgery for cancers of the lungs, esophagus, and other thoracic structures. He serves as Professor and Regional Chair of Surgery, Chief of Thoracic Surgery at Hackensack Meridian Health Network (Central Region), and Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine. Dr. Bhora has mentored 15 post-doctoral fellows, numerous residents, fellows, and over 350 medical students, and is frequently invited to organize, moderate, and lecture at national and international scientific meetings.
His current research centers on clinical outcomes and regenerative medicine, particularly 3D bioprinting of the trachea. Dr. Bhora's lab is recognized as a leader in tracheal regeneration and cancer outcomes research, including studies on lung and esophageal cancers and cancer care disparities.
A key focus of his practice is the treatment of complex airway issues, particularly tracheal stenosis. His work in bioengineered tracheal grafts has led to groundbreaking success, including the first large animal model to replace a segment of the trachea with a customized graft using 3D printing and a combination of ECM, polycaprolactone (PCL), and mesenchymal stem cells. His team continues to advance tracheal regeneration by developing grafts that replicate the biological functions of healthy tissue, combining clinical expertise with biomaterials and biomedical engineering.
