The summer research scholar program at the Center for Discovery and Innovation offers an immersive experience in academic research. If you have a passion for science, a curious mind, and a desire to contribute to groundbreaking projects, this program is tailor-made for you.

Each year, we provide comprehensive training to nearly 40 passionate individuals through our Summer Research Scholar Program. As a Research Scholar, you will have the chance to actively engage with our laboratory staff and assist in executing research techniques, contribute to data collection and entry, and play a role in compiling essential study documents.

Eligibility

Our Summer Research Scholar Program welcomes students who are eager to learn, contribute, and make the most of this exciting opportunity. If you're driven by curiosity and motivated to make a difference, we encourage you to apply.

Specific criteria include

  • High school and college students above the age of 16 are eligible to apply. Students under the age of 18 will require parental or guardian consent to be part of the program
  • Some prior analytical and research experience are preferable but are not a requirement
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • All Research Visitors must work a minimum of 25 hours per week
  • All Research Visitors must be cleared by the HMH Volunteer Office before they can come start
  • All volunteers must sign in and out daily
  • Remote or hybrid Research Visitors are not permitted
  • No stipends will be offered

Requirements for program completion:

Research Scholar Program:

  • Attend Orientation #1 or #2 as applicable (June 1, 2026, or July 6, 2026)
  • Attend ≥75% of “Meet the PI” sessions (Thursday's)
  • Attend ≥75% of “Career Series” sessions (Tuesday's)
  • Present at Summer Research Scholars Day (August 14, 2026)
Lab Component
  • Completed required training modules
  • Satisfactory evaluation from the mentor

Application Process

Applying is straightforward. Simply submit an Application, including a short statement of interest and any relevant qualifications.

Promising candidates will be invited for an interview for lab placement. If selected, you will then receive a Research Visitor Application from the HMH Volunteer Office. This application requires a detailed form, a background check, and medical clearance. Once your application is approved, you will receive an email with your clearance confirmation and a PIN. This PIN is required for checking in and out of the research visitor system.

  • Use the PIN provided to sign in and out each day you are volunteering
  • As a Research Visitor, you are invited to weekly lunch and learn sessions with CDI experts and faculty. Please RSVP to the calendar invitation you receive so we can plan accordingly

  • Application Start Date: Wednesday, December 10, 2025
  • Deadline for Summer Applications: Monday, February 16, 2026
  • Program start dates:
    • June 1, 2026
    • July 6, 2026
  • End date for the program: August 14, 2026

A similar schedule can be expected for year 2027.
